According to the General Plan for NingBo-Zhoushan Port approved by Ministry of Transport and Government of Zhejiang Province In 2009, NingBo-Zhoushan Port will be developed into one of the world's top cargo ports in the next few years. Its cargo handling capacity is estimated to reach 890 million tons in 2020, and container handling capacity 30 million standard containers.
NingBo-Zhoushan Port has coastlines 4,750 kilometers long in total, of which 449.4 kilometers are included in the General Plan. In Zhoushan Port area, 279.4 kilometers of the coastlines are put on the list of General Plan, including 245.8 kilometers of deep-water coastlines.
In the General Plan, NingBo-Zhoushan Port is considered to be an important hub for China's major sea ports and the national comprehensive transport system. It is a major component of Shanghai international transport system, and a transshipment port for bulk cargo like energy and raw materials in the Yangtze River Delta and areas along the Yangtze River.
