The 2017 International Islands Tourism Conference (IITCZS) threw a party on the Costa Atlantica cruise ship docked at Zhoushan Archipelago International Cruise Port on Sept 23.
More than 300 local residents and 46 delegations from 40 countries were invited to the Islands-Family event. The next morning, the cruise ship set off on a 7-day trip with over 2,000 passengers on board. It will stop at the Japanese cities of Osaka, Kagoshima and Beppu along the way.
They were given a one-day trip of the cruise ship and the chance to enjoy the entertainment on offer, including a pool party, magic shows, DJ sets and a beauty pageant. "I always hoped to travel by boat, so today is an exciting experience. And it's my first time to dance cha-cha," said a local resident named Zhang.
The boat party was the last event to be held by the conference, which has helped Chinese island tourism resorts build stronger ties with similar destinations around the world.
More than 30 cooperation agreements worth a combined 69.8 billion yuan ($10.5 billion) were signed during the conference.
Zhoushan also cemented its reputation as an emerging leader in island tourism by agreeing to set up an IITCZS secretariat.
"IITCZS is a platform to attract more islands, coastal countries, regions and cities along the Belt and Road initiative to take part in exploiting international island tourism," said Wen Nuan, the mayor of Zhoushan.
Zhoushan will focus on promoting cruise and yacht tourism over the next few years.
