Located in the middle of Zhoushan archipelago, Daishan County consists of 406 islands, among which Daishan Island, once called Peng Lai Xian Dao(meaning a fairy island in Cockaigne) in history, is the second biggest one in Zhoushan. As early as 4000 years ago, people began to work and live on the island, which is characterized with the sea, sand beaches, rocks, sea food, and lights on fishing boats. The county is also well known for its high quality salt which was exclusively used by royal families in feudal China. There are quite a few scenic spots in Daishan Island, including Mount Moxing, Town of Dongsha, Islands and Reefs Museum of China, and Marine Fishing Museum of China.
