To better serve Zhoushan's development and suit growing number of visitors, Mount Putuo Airport will carry out an expansion plan which has been approved by East China Civil Aviation Administration to extend aprons available for parking 12 planes, a 25 thousand square meters large terminal building which met demands for transporting 2 million passengers every year by 2020.
Rapid developing economy and social has outdated current Mount Putuo Airport, which was launched on August 8, 1997 and covered 3,000 mu areas. The 4D-level airport now only has a parking apron for eight planes, a 2,500 meters long and 45 meters wide run-way able to take off and land planes smaller than Boeing 757. The domestic terminal building can handle about 600 passengers per hour at rush time.
In November last year, Zhoushan Civil Aviation Administration drafted a plan for the airport's long term update, and presented it to higher authorities for ratification.
