Karamay became the most livable city in Northwest China, according to the Blue Paper of Annual Report on Urban Competitiveness, released on May 9 in Beijing.
About 290 Chinese cities are sorted by livability in the report. It shows that Karamay is ranked 22nd and Xi'an 36th. Among the top 50 cities, only Karamay and Xi’an are in Northwest China.
“It’s a kind of encouragement for us to build a high-quality city. It’s important for the reputation of Karamay,” said Hao Ruihong, of the Karamay Municipal Development and Reform Commission.
The top 10 cities on the list are Zhuhai, Hong Kong, Haikou, Sanya, Xiamen, Shenzhen, Zhoushan, Wuxi, Hangzhou and Shanghai.
The report shows that the eastern coastal cities, especially seaside cities, have a definite advantage, and the overall level of the west is relatively low. Among the national central cities Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin and Guangzhou, only Shanghai breaks into the top 10, and Beijing was ranked 41st.
The report is issued by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, which includes the rankings of competitiveness in comprehensive economic, urban livability, business potential and sustainable development. It’s updated each year.
